Phi Phi Islands

The Phi Phi islands are one of Thailand’s most loved holiday destinations and they contain a wide range of impressive resorts, gorgeous beaches, bays and islands which have been made famous through the world of film. However, this isn’t the only reason the destination is so popular. The Phi Phi islands have a fantastic scuba diving experience to offer to tourists. Diving Sites

Loh Samah Bay is located on the East of the island Koh Phi Phi Le. It is a great site for shallow and night dives. Hin Bida sits around 6 km from Koh Bida and is known as the ‘Phi Phi Shark Point’ due to leopard sharks being frequently seen in this area. Large rays sometimes pay a visit here, and at the southern end, the soft corals are particularly stunning. The famous Maya Bay is the setting for the movie ‘The Beach’ and has decent diving experiences on offer, which includes a large cavern.

Where to Stay

Finding accommodation close to the diving sites is handy when planning your trip and diving. When considering a Phi Phi beach front resort, knowing what you want to see or being close to multiple sites you’re considering visiting will come in handy when choosing somewhere. Due to the number of diving experiences on offer as well as other popular tourist attractions, having somewhere nice to stay in a good location can make your trip a lot easier and enjoyable.

Diving Seasons

Scuba diving seasons in the Phi Phi islands run throughout the year, but the best conditions are from February to May. During this time, the water is considered at its warmest, calmest, and clearest. The coldest time to scuba dive would be during January and December. The visibility of the water is 10-30 meters during the clearest times (January to April). Luckily, the seasons work well with the best times to visit Thailand

Marine Life

Within the shallow reefs of the islands, you can expect to see leopard sharks resting peacefully in the sand. Watching them swim is an unforgettable sight. Around the reefs, you can expect to see a lovely range of soft and hard corals where scorpionfish and moray eels reside. Depending on the reef being visited, you may get up and close with sea turtles who occasionally visit. Blacktip and whitetip reef sharks are known to make an appearance in the area, as well as bamboo sharks, which may be hiding beneath the rocks. Schools of barracuda, mackerel, snappers, and other pelagic species can be seen alongside cuttlefish, sea snakes, and the majestic Kuhl’s stingrays.

With so much to see and do in the Phi Phi islands, it is definitely worth a visit, especially if you are a lover of marine life and unique experiences. Making sure your trip fits around the seasons that are best for diving is a good idea, so you can get the most out of your marine encounter.
